The Legno mentioned in the following text is from the HLE-1SK series, not the common Hippo Wood HLE-250K series.
Bai Le Legno is developed based on the S20. The common S20 mechanical pencil has a long core tube on the pen tip, which improves stability when drawing. However, it is very fragile and easily bends under external force, making it inconvenient to store. Later, the S20 writing version was introduced, with a conical pen tip, but it has gradually been discontinued. Now, the S20 writing version has been replaced by the Legno model.
Legno comes from Italian and translates to "forest" or "wood". Legno is divided into two series: "HLE-1SK" and "HLE-250K". The materials of the pen barrels in these two series are hippo wood and hard maple wood, with a price difference of about 1000 yen. You can find them by searching for "Bai Le Legno hard maple wood" on Taobao. If you search for "Bai Le Legno", the results will show the most expensive one.
The unique feature of Legno's own design is that it combines various designs from predecessors, with a wooden pen body, metal pen clip, pen tip, and cap. Then... it can't be disassembled anymore. You can consider splitting the pen barrel to see the internal structure .
By comparing the pictures, it can be seen that Legno is not as aesthetically pleasing as the S20, but overall, it is smooth and tender like a girl's leg. The pen barrel has a certain curvature, is slightly thick, and has a lower center of gravity. The pen body design of the S20 is excellent and very suitable for girls with small hands, while the Legno is obviously more suitable for boys with large hands. It is recommended to give the S20 to girls.
I purchased the brown version, and the material of the pen body is made from the remaining hard maple wood of a baseball bat, so there may be slight unevenness on the pen body. When viewed up close, there are many small dents, but they are barely perceptible to the touch and can only be seen visually.
Under the light, the pen barrel reflects light, indicating that it is painted. The overall appearance is simple and unadorned (cheap texture), somewhere between the S20 and another Legno model.
Overall, this pencil is average. If you have a limited budget and like a thick wooden pen barrel, don't miss this one.
